How the Africa quiz works
Every round picks ten African countries at random. The globe zooms to each one and highlights it, and you choose its name from four options before the 30-second timer runs out. Then comes the capital. Answer quickly for more points, and keep a streak going for bonuses. Your best score is saved on your device, and good runs can go on the Africa leaderboard.
Five African countries are island nations too small to see at globe scale: Cabo Verde, Comoros, Mauritius, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Seychelles. The globe rounds use the other 49. You can practise all 54 in Name the Countries and the Flag Quiz.
Tips for learning Africa's map
Learn it region by region. North Africa runs along the Mediterranean: Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt. West Africa's coast bulges out into the Atlantic from Senegal to Nigeria. East Africa runs from Eritrea down to Tanzania, and southern Africa ends with South Africa, which completely surrounds Lesotho.
Watch the look-alike names. Guinea, Guinea-Bissau and Equatorial Guinea are three separate countries, and only the first two are neighbours. Niger and Nigeria share a border, with Niger to the north. The Republic of the Congo and the much larger Democratic Republic of the Congo have capitals facing each other across the Congo River: Brazzaville and Kinshasa.
Capitals that are not the biggest city cause the most mistakes: Nigeria's capital is Abuja, not Lagos. Tanzania's is Dodoma, not Dar es Salaam. Côte d'Ivoire's official capital is Yamoussoukro, not Abidjan, and Morocco's is Rabat, not Casablanca. Burundi moved its capital from Bujumbura to Gitega in 2019.

Frequently asked questions
How many countries are there in Africa?
Africa has 54 countries recognised by the United Nations, more than any other continent. The African Union also counts Western Sahara, whose status is disputed.
What is the largest country in Africa?
Algeria is the largest by area, at about 2.4 million km². Nigeria has the most people, with over 220 million.
Which African country has three capitals?
South Africa: Pretoria (executive), Cape Town (parliament) and Bloemfontein (judiciary). GuessGlobe accepts Pretoria as the answer.
